Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/your company?

Seanna Bailey and Zuri Skeete are up and coming choreographers that are collaborating for the first time to bring their unique style together on the stage for the first time.

What will you be sharing at DanceWeekend’22?

Erlebnisse [Er-leb-nis-se] – The experiences, positive or negative, that we feel most deeply and through which we truly live; not mere experiences, but Experiences. Just as tree ferns fall over in the wild yet manage to reroot from this new position and begin new growth, so must we. We discover the beauty in the chaos that will lead to our rebirth and growth. This piece explores the moments in our journey of perseverance where we must fight or surrender to our experiences to become fully rerooted.

How has the pandemic shifted your work as a professional dance artist?

Zuri: The pandemic has shifted my work towards being very introspective and reflective. Throughout the pandemic I’ve done many self-reflections as a Black woman within society and the dance community. These self-reflections have manifested themselves into the work I’m interested in exploring and creating. As a professional dance artist throughout the pandemic, I have also broadened my work and interests to encompass delving into dance on film. With a mix of creating dance films and live work for stage, the pandemic has encouraged me to be adaptable and learn how to seek and create opportunities for myself. Seanna: The pandemic has brought me back to the root of all my work, my inner being. I ride with the idea that being a human comes before being an artist, one feeding into the other. With that outlook, It gave me the time to detach from parts of my life to be able to reconnect, or more so nourish other parts of my soul that were neglected. The pandemic brought me a humbling and raw perspective, that has now made me consciously create/move with the intention that there is nothing to prove, only to share

Please share what you are most looking forward to at Dance Ontario’s return to live performances at DanceWeekend?

We are looking forward to bringing our community together again, and to be able to participate in the art form of dance, where we can tell stories and the audience can receive that story and all the imagination that comes with it.
