Can you tell us little bit about your company/collective/school?
The Ukrainian Academy of Dance has trained over 1500 dancers since it was founded in 1987. This year the school is celebrating its 32nd anniversary. Arkan Dance Company was launched as the performing ensemble of the Academy. Since their formation, Arkan has performed at International festivals in Florida, New York and Boston, U.S.A, Taiwan, Brazil, at Canada’s National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin, Manitoba, Drummondville, Quebec, Nova Scotia, China, Mexico, Turkey, Italy, Korea, Ukraine and Indonesia. This summer Arkan will be travelling to Ukraine to participate in several international dance festivals as well as take classes with world renowned companies such as Virsky.
What are showing at DanceWeekend’19?
Arkan will be presenting selected pieces of their repertoire performed by their Sr and Jr company members as well as the Ensemble.
Who are the performers/collaborators in this piece(s)?
The choreographers for the pieces include Danovia Stechishin, Larissa Szachrajuk and national artist of Ukraine, Rafayil Malynowsky
Can you talk about your creative process? What inspires you?
Arkan has a unique Canadian Ukrainian feel. We draw inspiration from Ukrainian culture and traditions while incorporated our unique Canadian Ukrainian heritage as well.
Please share your experience performing in a previous DanceWeekend and/or tell us what you are looking forward to at DanceWeekend’19?
Our dancers always look forward to being a part of DanceWeekend. It allows us to see what is happening in the Ontario dance community. It allows us to share our story and journey while at the same time experiencing others.
What is one surprising or interesting fact about your company/collective/school?
Arkan Dance Company performed at Madison Square Gardens for the United Nations millennium summit in front many of the worlds leaders.
