- Can you tell us little bit about your company/collective/school?
Sampradaya Dance Creations is an award winning dance company that was established by Lata Pada in 1990. SDC is at the forefront of South Asian dance in Canada and at the core of the Company’s artistic vision is the resounding belief that dance is a powerful medium to communicate the magic, beauty and mystery of life.
- What are showing at DanceWeekend’19?
The company will present their new work ‘Nirvana’. Based on the Niravanashtakam – the six-fold shloka written by the Hindu philosopher Adi Shankara that summarizes the basic teachings of non-dualism, the Advaita Vedanta, the verses are believed to help contemplation practices that lead to Self-Realization. This new ensemble work has been choreographed by Parshwanath Upadhye for Sampradaya Dance Creations and will premiere here this evening for this very special occasion.
Depicting also excerpts of various stories from Indian mythology, and in complete equanimity, peace and joy with the true self, Sampradaya Dance Creations presents Nirvana

- Please share your experience performing in a previous DanceWeekend and/or tell us what you are looking forward to at DanceWeekend’19?
The Dance Ontario Dance Weekend has been the most exciting weekend for all dance enthusiasts in the city. And to be invited and given an opportunity to bring our newest work onto the Dance Weekend stage is something we have always been are very excited and grateful about!
- Do you have any up-coming performances/events you would like to share?
In 2019, we will be celebrating our 30th year and have a year filled with events and activities. We launch our 4-city dance symposium in Mississauga called MOMENTUM that will see master teachers from India and Canada conduct dance workshops and career development sessions for local dancers, along with dance presentations by emerging and established artists over a week long event. This symposium will then travel to Montreal, Edmonton and Vancouver and focus on training and guiding local talent that practises South Asian dance forms.
