20 days until #DanceWeekend21! Meet Avinoam Silverman.
After a dance career with The National Ballet of Canada and dabbling in teaching, Avinoam created Avinoam Silverman Dance as another outlet for creation. Since 2015, he’s produced three dance works for the stage, and is showcasing his first film at #DanceWeekend21. His film Diversion was the first project created with his company. “One of the things I enjoy about film is the freedom to shoot in different locations and then putting it all together with editing, which is not possible to do in real time with a live performance.”
Catch his film Diversion on Saturday, May 1 #ComeDanceWithUs. And follow @avinoamsilverman for updates on his current work-in-progress Waiting for the Fall, premiering later this year.

Can you tell us little bit about yourself/your company/collective/school?
My career as a dancer was with The National Ballet of Canada and while with the company I created a few works as part of the companies choreographic workshop. I have always enjoyed improvising/creating even as a young dancer/student in Israel. After my dancing career was over I started teaching but wanted an outlet for creation so I founded my project based company. Since founding my company Avinoam Silverman Dance in 2015 I have created 4 dance works which include one dance film (which will be shown at DanceWeekend) and three works for the stage. I am grateful to Dance Ontario for giving me the opportunity to share two of those works – Anvil 18 and In Between in previous Dance Weekends.
What will you be sharing at DanceWeekend’21?
My Dance film Diversion the first project I created with my company.
What interests about film as a medium and how does if differ from a live performance?
One of the things I enjoy about film is the freedom to shoot in different locations and then in the editing process putting it all together this is not possible to do in real time live performance.
How has the pandemic shifted your work as a professional dance artist?
A lot more teaching and dancing online! And more dancing outside : )
Please share what you are most looking forward to at Dance Ontario’s first virtual DanceWeekend?
I’m looking forward to connecting with other artists and seeing all the other works! I’m very excited to see what everyone has been up too!
Do you have any up-coming performances/workshops/events you would like to share?
I’m in the process of creating a new work with 5 dancers titled Waiting for the Fall. This work touches on the complex nature of our close relationships and on the range of emotions we go through when loosing someone close to us. Due to the pandemic I had to push the dates for the shows forward but I’m hoping we can perform it around September or maybe earlier?
In 1 or 2 sentences, what does dance mean to you?
Dance is the physical expression of our spiritual essence and a way to express deeply and creatively our most intimate emotions.
