Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/your company?

Yasmina Ramzy is the director of Yasmina Ramzy Arts (formerly Arabesque). She has created over 200 ensemble choreographies, including ten full-length productions, for twentyfive dance companies in the United States and Canada, since 1981. Yasmina has produced ten international dance festivals and conferences and two dance films. She received her essential training from teachers in Egypt and Syria and has performed extensively in the Middle East, primarily with the master musicians of Syria. Yasmina has taught in 70 cities around the world and her productions have toured in the United States, Greece, Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and across Canada

What will you be sharing at DanceWeekend’22?

Three new choreographies debuting at DanceWeekend’22. One is in a modern Egyptian Streetdance style, one is an emotional meditation and one is evocative of Pharaonic themes celebrating the The Parade of the Pharaohs with took place in Cairo in 2021.

How has the pandemic shifted your work as a professional dance artist?

There is more of a focus on creating choreography for film instead of theatre productions

Please share what you are most looking forward to at Dance Ontario’s return to live performances at DanceWeekend?

Seeing my favourite dance artists and companies performing and meeting up in the lobby reconnecting and hugging.

Do you have any up-coming performances/workshops/events you would like to share?

Beginning work this Summer to create a film called “Seven Gates” which had been Yasmina Ramzy’s dream vision for 25 years. It will be be completed in 2023.
