We chatted with Broken Dance about what they will be showing on the Dance Weekend stage! Don’t miss them Sunday January 21 at 4:40PM – 5:00PM.
- Can you tell us a little bit about your company/collective/school?
Broken Dance is the leading Bollywood Dance Company in Canada, they are most well known for their time on the television show Canada’s Got Talent where they were finalists! The company is know for specializing in all sorts of South Asian styles of dance and innovating movement by incorporating Western dance styles and fusing the two worlds of dance to create unique choreography. - What will you be showing at DanceWeekend?
During dance weekend we will be showing the viewers a taste of Bollywood and Indian dance styles. We will be showcasing different styles of Indian dance but within a Bollywood Spectacle. Get ready to look at Bollywood in a different way with the use of fusion movements and some of the most talented South Asian dancers in the Canada.
- Can you talk about your creative process? What inspires you?
My process as a creative choreographer is to decide on my goal I want to achieve from a show and pick music and costumes according to how I want my audience in feel. As I choreograph I tend to play the song over and over as I just sit quietly in a space and get lost in the song, to the point where I start imagining dancers dancing to the song at hand. The images that are unique and special stay with me and I use that as the base for my choreography.
- Do you have any other up-coming performances/events you would like to share?
We are looking to create a large scale Bollywood production as we just finished a smaller scale production called Unkaha. Unkaha was an emotional show about the Untold stories of the South Asian Community using Indian and Fusion Dance.
- What is one thing you love most about your dance community?
I love the heritage and the diversity of styles in the Indian community. There are countless styles of dance in India from region to region and I am so happy to be from a place that is so rich with culture that has celebrated dance to create such unique forms.
- What does performing at the 25th Annual DanceWeekend mean to you?
My company has been around for years, and has been doing big things around Toronto and Canada for a while yet we have never gotten a chance to just be a part of the dance community. Being part of the dance weekend means being part of the dance community, which is breaking boundaries for us.
- What is one surprising/interesting fact about your company/collective/school?
Our dance company just started with a bunch of students just wanted to create unique dance, was never supposed to be a professional endeavour.
