June 14 to 18, 2023
Guloien Theatre, 345 Carlaw Avenue
Choreography by Guillaume Côté Performed by Natasha Poon Woo, Martha Hart, Willem Sadler, Kelly Shaw, Evan Webb
Crow’s Theatre presents the Toronto premiere of Côté Danse’s X (DIX) with choreography by Guillaume Côté. The last stop of a spring tour across Quebec, five exquisite performers share the minimalist set stage of X (DIX), journeying far but always desiring to return home. The surging and sculptural sounds of experimental band Son Lux are amplified by the complex choreography. X (DIX), performed by Natasha Poon Woo, Martha Hart, Willem Sadler, Kelly Shaw, and Evan Webb, explore the myth of Odysseus through the notion of the ‘inner compass’ and the idea that ‘home’ may be a state of mind. X (DIX) was conceived during the pandemic—a transformative time when travellers were summoned home, and when the very concept of home gained new importance. “The piece is very powerful and shows an evolution of Guillaume Côté’s style as a choreographer.” Chroniques de danse Informed by his classical ballet vocabulary, Guillaume Côté’s choreography contours space with resonant geometries and fervent human connections. Contemporary lines and forms with a sleek edge and refined athleticism give his work a bracing quality. Principal Dancer and Choreographic Associate at The National Ballet of Canada (NBOC), Guillaume Côté, “one of the finest male dancers in the world” (The London Times), is respected internationally for his outstanding musicality, technique, and dramatic interpretation. He has danced most of the major classical roles with the NBOC and has had several lead roles created on him. In 2013, he was appointed Choreographic Associate at the NBOC and, since 2014, he has been Artistic Director of the Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur in Québec. Côté Danse is committed to taking dance beyond the traditional studio and venue settings.
