About Nina Milanovski:
Nina Milanovski is a producer and contemporary dance artist based in Toronto. A graduate of the York University Dance program, Nina specialized in choreography and performance and was a member of the York Dance Ensemble for two seasons where she collaborated with artists such as Carol Anderson, Tracey Norman, and Susan Lee. In 2019, she had the honour of returning to the York Dance Ensemble as a choreographer to create “theta waves”, an intense and athletic work exploring the dynamism of dreams. As the 2021 Artist in Residence for Good Women Collective, Nina developed “uncoupling” , a duet that explores the unravelling of a romantic relationship between two women by exploring the passage of time and foreshadowing. Looking forward, Nina is excited to develop new presentation opportunities that prioritize experimentation and the development of queer art.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/your company?
I am a choreographer and producer based in Toronto, Ontario and I work primarily within contemporary dance. My artistic practice as a choreographer is built around broadening audiences and building community through contemporary dance. My works are inspired by the big emotions we feel as humans, such as love and grief, and the identities we carry with us. By tapping into intense human emotions I aim to create works that are accessible to audiences who are unfamiliar with dance. By using common experiences like falling in love or grieving a loss, audiences can relate to what is happening on stage even if they have never attended a dance show before.
What will you be sharing at DanceWeekend’24?
uncoupling is a duet that studies how people transition from individuals, to partners, to ending their relationship and finding themselves as individuals once again. The piece examines why certain relationships don’t work, even if it seems like they should, and how despite having a history and a connection with someone there can be something deeper keeping a couple apart.
How has the pandemic shifted your work as a professional dance artist?
During the pandemic my creative practice took a backseat in order to focus on my mental health. However, now I am focused on building queer community within the dance sector in Toronto and building my practice as a curator.
Please share what you are most looking forward to at DanceWeekend?
I am looking forward to seeing such a wide variety of work on one of my favoyrite stages in Toronto!
In 1 or 2 sentences, what does dance mean to you?
Dance is about sharing an experience with others that is truly ephemeral and transcends the boundaries of language.
