Canadian flamenco dancer Anjelica Scannura wins coveted spot to perform in Madrid’s Certamen Coreografia de Danza Espanola y Flamenco.  (Spanish Dance and Flamenco Choreography Competition.

Award-winning dancer and choreographer Anjelica Scannura is invited to showcase her choreography in Madrid in the prestigious choreographic competition December 18 to the 21st at the Conde Duque Cultural Center in Madrid.

The choreography contest of Spanish Dance and Flamenco gives a platform to present and compete new choreographic works in the genre of Spanish dance, which is held yearly in Madrid since 1992.  The incentives for the competition are to allow new creations in Spanish dance and flamenco and to promote collaborations between composers and choreographers, encouraging a high technical and artistic level of dancers and performers.  Its mandate is also to give recognition and prestige to young choreographers who have taken risks to enrich the fusion of Spanish dance genres.

Anjelica has won a coveted spot out of many applicants who had to go through an intense selection process.  She will be one of between 10-14 performers, which range from soloists, to emerging companies from Spain.  Anjelica will be the only foreign performer and in the history of this competition and there has rarely if every been a successful applicant from outside of Spain.

Past years have seen distinguished flamenco dancers launch their careers.  Dancers such as Olga Pericet, Maria Juncal, Ruben Olmo and Manuel Linan are presently some of the most notable names in flamenco dance that have participated in the Certamen.   The judging panel has consisted of more established artists such as Antonio Canales, Antonio Najarro (Artistic Director of the National Ballet of Spain), Rafaela Carrasco and Eva la Yerbabuena.

Anjelica just finished a successful and sold-out performance of Danzas Sagradas, which was part of Harbourfront Centre’s NextSteps dance series.  She is Co-Artistic Director of the Toronto-based dance company Ritmo Flamenco and has performed in many festivals and concerts around the world.  She has premiered works in the Guelph Dance Festival and is the 2012 Paula Citron Fresh Blood Award winner for her controversial dance piece “After The Fall”. She is currently a board member of Dance Ontario.   This is a selection from her review from Paula Citron:

“Scannura is developing her own hybrid and she is truly a representative of Canadian dance in that respect.  Her dancing and choreography expresses a country of immigrants where many styles collide together to take dance into New World territory” – Paula Citron

Anjelica currently has a campaign on Indiegogo to raise money for her trip.
