Gender Roles in the World of Dance

“‘Gender roles’ are behaviours, attitudes, and dispositions that are associated with a masculine or feminine social role”1 that affect all of us in our daily lives.
So, how do these culturally determined behaviours permeate through the dance community? Our discussion will challenge and question gender roles, including perceived differences regarding strength, ability and skill. Through examining different art forms, we will explore intersecting identities and how they interact with or influence people’s experiences differently in the world of dance.
We will address queries such as how do gender stereotypes differ between dance styles, are there any benefits in continuing to cast within these norms, and how can we challenge and work towards breaking these gender stereotypes. To delve deeper into and spread awareness within artistic practices, we have invited a panel of dance educators, professionals, and emerging artists to participate in a provoking and exciting conversation about gender roles in the world of dance.
