Heartless

BLUE CEILING DANCE CELEBRATES 20 YEARS WITH “HEARTLESS” — PREMIERES OCT.17

As a part of Citadel Live 24-25, Blue Ceiling Dance is premiering the new solo, heartless, by choreographer-dancer Lucy Rupert.

Can a creature without a heart act morally?

Heartless are episodes in the life of a robot, chapters of a peculiar book of moral philosophy, and a song without words. It started with questions about the mythology, “personhood” and moral status of robots but has tunneled down into rabbit holes of war, love, and self-control, biography, and fiction.

Building on the diverse experiences of her career – from political history to theatre and circus work, motherhood to metaphysics – heartless is both deeply personal and completely synthetic.

With lighting design by veteran designer Gabriel Cropley, outside eye support from long-time Blue Ceiling dance collaborator, Sky Fairchild-Waller, and a medley of music from significant periods in the evolution of robots, “Heartless” opens the black box of the title creature, and pulls out all the moving parts.
