Randolph Academy President and Founder George Randolph has won the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts’ (TAPA) Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award. Nominated by theatre impresario David Mirvish, Mr. Randolph received the award today at TAPA’s press conference with the season’s Dora Award nominations.

 

In his nomination, Mr. Mirvish cited Mr. Randolph’s contributions to the arts in Canada for over 30 years, whether producing world-class dance shows; nurturing the education of young artists in Canada, Jordan, and China, not only through the Randolph Academy but also Show Choir Canada; maintaining through adaptive reuse a building integral to the heritage of the arts in Canada; and supporting the development of new artistic works by Canadian creators. The Barbara Hamilton award joins a list of accolades for Mr. Randolph, who has been recognized by the Academy of Canadian Cinema and Television (Canadian Screen Award, Unsung: Behind the Glee, Best Biography or Arts Documentary Program or Series), Harbourfront Centre, Dance Immersion, and The Ontario Black History Society.

 

Established in 1996 in recognition of the canon of work that was Barbara Hamilton’s career, the Barbara Hamilton Memorial Award is presented to Canadian artist who demonstrates excellence in the performing arts and is dedicated to advocating and being an ambassador for the arts in Canada. The Award is administered by the City of Toronto with calls for nominations sent out from TAPA. The award comes with a cheque for $1,500.00 and a scroll from the City of Toronto.
