About Fareh Malik:

Fareh Malik, Ian Simon, and Safa Ali are all artists in their own right that have come from dance. Spanning writing, filmmaking, and production, these artists have come together in order to create SURVIVING SILENCE– a dance film that showcases how movement can be a way to persevere through depression.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/your company?

I have been a dancer and choreographer for 11 years, and have recently found a career in writing. Authoring my first book, I wanted to take my poetic narration into the field of short film.

What will you be sharing at DanceWeekend’24?

SURVIVING SILENCE is a short film that explores dance and depression.

How has the pandemic shifted your work as a professional dance artist?

It has allowed me to seek more accessible and collaborative avenues in order to maintain my necessity for innovation and community building.

What interests you about film as a medium and how does if differ from a live performance?

With film, you are able to innately focus in on specific angles/tones/movements that may be difficult to illustrate live on stage. I think small details like that make a big difference when trying to explore a specific theme and serious tone.

What does dance mean to you?

Dance, for me, has always meant endurance. In my darkest moments, it has been a way for me to keep moving and growing. It has been both an escape, and a way to face my fears.
