About Newton Moraes Dance Theatre:

Newton Moraes Dance Theatre is a company dedicated to the creation, performance and production of contemporary dance works to explore, maintain and develop the links between the arts of Canada and Latin America. Newton Moraes Dance Theatre had toured in Canada and internationally to public and critical acclaim. NMDT has received support over the years from Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, Laidlaw Foundation, Goethe Institute Toronto, Foreign Affair Canada, Dance Ontario Association, Polo da Zona Norte in Sao Paulo/Brazil.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/your company?

Newton Moraes has choreographed more than fifty works, both for himself and other dancers and has received public and critical acclaim in Canada, Colombia, Brazil, Germany, Cuba and the US. In addition to his work in Toronto, his work has been performed internationally with the support from the Toronto Arts Council, Ontario Arts Council, Canada Council for the Arts, Laidlaw Foundation, Goethe Institute Toronto, Dance Ontario Association, Foreign Affairs Canada, District Institute of Culture and Tourism of Bogotá, Colombia, The Canadian Embassy in Brasilia, Choreographic Centre of the city of Rio de Janeiro Brazil.

How has the pandemic shifted your work as a professional dance artist?
It was an incredible challenge to create and to explore during covid but we managed and found ways to continue our path as artists.

Please share what you are most looking forward to at DanceWeekend?
connecting with the audience, seeing many friends, seeing many shows, chat with people.

Do you have any upcoming performances/workshops/events you would like to share?
Newton Moraes will be perfuming in March at Citadel a new solo work as part of the Winds in the leaves Collective.

In 1 or 2 sentences, what does dance mean to you?

Dance is everything for me! It is the better way I can communicate and express myself.
