About Unapologetic Dance Company:
Unapologetic Dance Company, founded and led by Kahvontay Willis-Slaughter, is a Toronto-based dance group that comprises of talented dancers who use movement to express their deepest emotions and vulnerabilities. The company provides a safe and accepting space for both aspiring and professional artists to grow, thrive and showcase their authentic selves without any apologies. Over the years, Unapologetic Dance Company has produced several successful full-length shows. Currently, the company is focused on its third full-length show, “Sonder” which is creatively directed by senior company member and choreographer, Zina Begovic.
Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/your company?
My name is Kahvontay Slaughter my passion for dance has been a driving force my entire life. From a young age I have had to work hard to pursue my dreams, and at the age of sixteen, I secured my first job to self-fund additonal extensive dance training. My dedication and commitment to my craft is what truly inspired me to create Unapologetic Dance Company.
What will you be sharing at DanceWeekend’24?
We are thrilled to debut “Sentience meets Sonder”. When I started this company, I had no idea of the magnitude and possibilities that would come with it. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to share it with such talented artists. This work bridges and debuts the next generation of “Unapologetic Dance Artists” while still paying tribute and recognizing the work that has been put in order for Unapologetic to get where it is today. We once again will tap into our vivid experiences from Sentience and weave together a journey that takes you in its final moments into “Sonder,” our next full-length show Creative Directed by Zina Begovic. It’s a testament to the power of art and how having the right people in your corner can take you a long way.
How has the pandemic shifted your work as a professional dance artist?
The pandemic took away so many things from us, and for me, it meant putting my first full-length show on hold. But in a strange way, I think the pandemic changed me and my art for the better. It forced me to slow down and figure out what was truly important. I began to focus on quality over quantity and really develop my artistic voice. Even while teaching and doing rehearsals virtually, I found ways to help others find the light. It’s been a challenging time, but I’m grateful for the opportunity to grow and evolve as an artist.
Please share what you are most looking forward to at DanceWeekend?
I’m incredibly excited to see my dance company perform on the same stage as so many incredible artists that we look up to and who have paved the way for us. It’s an honor to share the same space and showcase our work alongside such talented individuals.
Do you have any up-coming performances/workshops/events you would like to share?
Absolutely, keep an eye out for our next full-length show coming in May 2024 entitled “Sonder”. Creative Directed by Zina Begovic.
In 1 or 2 sentences, what does dance mean to you?
The meaning of dance is ever-changing for myself. Currently, it represents the feeling of liberation and freedom.
