Job Summary
Our team is seeking dynamic dance instructors to teach weekday DAYTIME SCHOOL PROGRAMS and/or EVENING AND WEEKEND RECREATIONAL AND RECITAL DANCE PROGRAMS. Participants in our programs are ages 4 to adult. Successful candidates will be responsible for the instruction of programs as outlined by the Culture and Recreation Divisions to meet the needs of participants and to ensure adequate safety while facilitating the activity.

– Weekday, daytime school workshop programs
– Evening and Weekend Recreational and Recital Dance Classes

We are hiring Dance Instructors to teach in the following styles:
– Hip Hop
– Tap
– Ballet
– Jazz
– Contemporary
– Lyrical
– Acro
– Preschool – Creative Movement

Duties and Responsibilities
Responsible for conducting an engaging class that meets the program outlines and instructing in the styles of dance that are required or assigned to teach.

Instruct comprehensive school and sessional dance program(s) to meet the needs of all participants in the program(s).
Work with groups of up to 30 participants
Prepare detailed lessons plans (including HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development, if appropriate) to ensure classes are meeting program outlines
Prepare choreography for end of session performance/Parent’s Day to highlight achievements of the participants
Teach basic to advanced dance steps to program participants through group lessons
Find and prepare music that is appropriate for the program and matches technical exercises used in class
Incorporate and model the HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development in program delivery where appropriate
Ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants by adhering to Department Safety and Program Standards.
Manage participants’ behavior to ensure safety
Use creative teaching approaches to meet the individual needs of participants
Ensure program space is appropriate and set up to maximize program delivery potential and safety of participants.
Provide quality customer service and act as a knowledgeable resource to parents of participants
Promote program and provide information for progression in the dance program
Ensure all participants are registered correctly into programs, maintain attendance lists and perform any additional administrative tasks as required.
Communicate with Supervisor regarding program
Skills and Qualifications
Minimum of 3 years experience teaching or performing dance
Dance Teaching Certification from a recognized instructor certification program (RAD, ISTD, BATD, CDTA, DMA) preferred
HIGH FIVE® Principles of Healthy Child Development
Completed intermediate/ advance level exams in related field (or must be able to satisfy the requirements of the syllabus)
Emergency First Aid and CPR “B” Certification
Physical exercises while instructing.
Primarily community centre environment.
A Level 3 – Vulnerable check will be required of the successful candidate, as a condition of employment, at their own expense, to verify the absence of a criminal record for which a pardon has not been granted.

Additional Information

Candidates must available to participate in a Practical Assessment at the end of August – early September
Candidates must be available for training September 14 and 15 (full day) and September 17 and 18 (evening)
Programs will start September 21, 2024
Pay rate is determined based on the program that is being instructed – School, Instructional, Recital, Competitive
Dance Instructors are paid for class prep for each class taught, recital/dress rehearsal, and attendance at competitions, meetings in addition to the actual classroom teaching time.
Training is also compensated at an hourly training rate $16.55

Hourly Rates;
Evening/Weekend Recreation/Instructional Classes: $17.70 – $21.08
Evening/Weekend Recital /Competitive Classes: $22.61 – $24.85
School Workshops: $22.12 – $29.49

PLEASE NOTE: The City of Mississauga pays hourly for the time directly spent teaching each class. In addition, Instructors will be further compensated for choreography and program specific requirements per class taught.
