A unique residency experience that brings together mid-career dance artists, emerging dance artists, and choreographers with an international faculty to explore new thinking and forms in dance theatre, process, and performance. The aim of The Creative Gesture is to create a rare space in the dance world for today’s curious and elite dance artist. It is a space for research, sharing, and the posing o questions around the creation process, daily training, somatic practices, and the future of contemporary dance.

Emerging artists will shadow the primary company in the creation process, fully participate in the daily training program and the choreographic lab, and perform an additional new work created specifically for them. Applicants should be at a point of transition into the professional dance field, as recent graduates either of a professional dance program, or in the early stages of a professional performing career.
Participation in the creation of an original dance theatre commission will be at the heart of the first four weeks of this residency, culminating in three public performances. Applicants should be firmly established as dance professionals with at least three years of company, independent, or project performance experience. Choreographers at any stage of their careers, who want to develop an understanding of and ability to use improvisation in the creative process, to expand and deepen their artistic vision, as well as generate new and innovative movement materials, are invited to apply! Choreographers will work with emerging and mid-career dance artists to explore new thinking, forms, and process in dance theatre choreography. Learn more about the program.
Program head and faculty member Stephan Laks (GöteborgsOperans Danskompani) has assembled extraordinary international faculty including Fernando Melo (GöteborgsOperan Danskompani), Tilman O’Donnell (formerly of the Forsythe Company), Adi Salant (co-artistic director of Batsheva Dance Company), Jermaine Spivey (Kidd Pivot) and Michael Schumacher (choreographer).
