Workshop Description:

Join renowned Brazilian dancer and choreographer Newton Moraes for an exciting workshop that delves into the diverse world of Brazilian dance. Explore a wide range of styles, including Orixás, Samba, and street dance, while benefiting from Newton’s extensive experience. With years of teaching at Ballet Creole, York University’s Dance Department (during his MFA in Choreography), and Humber College’s Acting for TV and Film and Theatre Departments, Newton brings a wealth of knowledge and passion to his sessions. Newton’s workshops are known for their high energy, physicality, and intricate movements, making them both fun and educational. Plus, the workshop often features live percussion from his long-time collaborator, Walter Maclean—one of Canada’s most respected percussionists, with over 20 years of partnership.

Can you tell us a little bit about yourself/your company?

I am a board member of the Dance Ontario Association, as well as the founder, choreographer, and artistic director of Newton Moraes Dance Theatre, a company founded in 1997. Newton Moraes Dance Theatre is known for its vibrant blend of contemporary dance and Afro-Brazilian culture, exploring themes of identity, spirituality, and social issues. Through innovative choreography and expressive performances, the company has gained recognition both in Brazil and internationally for its captivating and thought-provoking works

 Workshop level/target audience and suggested attire and footwear
Dancers are encouraged to dance barefoot. However, if you prefer to wear shoes, please ensure they are indoor shoes that do not mark the floor.
Do you have any up-coming performances/workshops/events you would like to share?
Newton Moraes Dance Theatre will present My Dance Is Not A Hobby at the University of Guelph on February 28th. The company will also perform in Saskatoon in April 2025, with the exact date to be announced. Additionally, My Dance Is Not A Hobby will be showcased at the Vanguardia Dance Festival on May 31st and June 1st, at the Aki Studio in Daniel Spectrum, Toronto.
What does dance mean to you?
Dance is like food to me; I can’t imagine my life without it. It’s the most powerful way I can express myself—physically embodying my spirituality while also creating meaningful connections with others.
