We are incredibly saddened to share the news of Kate Lowe’s sudden passing.

Kate was a devoted and vibrant member of our dance community, who touched many lives in big and small ways with her quiet generosity. Kate was an active and committed member of the Dance Ontario Board for over 17 years. She was instrumental in bringing about and supporting Dance Ontario’s Regional Networks. As founder and chair, she nurtured and grew community through the Halton Dance Network specifically over the last 10 years. Her passion and advocacy for dance was equally seen in her role as an educator and community organizer. A true loss to both dance and education.

More about Kate:
Kaylynne (Kate) Lowe was a retired Halton District School Board teacher who taught Dance and Drama to intermediate students for 28 years. She also wrote programmes and curriculum in addition to running workshops for colleagues. Kate directed and choreographed numerous school musicals and coached school dance teams. She was part of the planning team which developed HDSB’s Creating A Scene which was held annually at Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre, and was the creator/founder of HDSB’s annual dance festival Florescence celebrating International Dance Day for which she received an Award of Merit. Kate was a dancer with Burlington Footnotes (a senior’s performance troupe), where she also took part in designing and constructing costumes. She volunteered in several schools helping with their Dance and Drama programmes, choreographing musicals and developing original dance and drama pieces for festivals. Recently, Kate began working with autistic children in an educational setting. She was the coordinator for the Halton Dance Network. With a foundation in ballet and jazz; Kate continually stretched her horizons in dance by studying and attending various dance genres, modalities and venues across Ontario.

An extremely kind and caring soul.  We thank her for sharing the dance floor and her enormous heart with us. May she rest in peace, power and forever dance in our hearts.

We invite you to view this short film: Windows of Time (Halton Edition) a beautiful movement and nature based film in which Kate is prominently featured. The melancholic/meditative music and beautiful images in the context of Kate’s death is a beautiful expression of her passion for dance and community.

Dance Ontario’s Staff and Board offer our deepest condolences to Kate’s family, friends and dance community.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
