Honouring: Faith Jade Buchanan

In celebration of International Dance Day 2025, Shared by Dance Ontario’s Youth Advisory Committee

Born: Brampton, Ontario

Faith Jade is a dancer, choreographer, and educator who is deeply passionate about celebrating Black culture through movement. She is known for using dance to spotlight Black voices and stories, especially in communities across Ontario.

Faith studied dance and education at York University, earning her Bachelor of Fine Arts, Bachelor of Education and Master of Education. Her academic and creative work focuses on “creating affirming, culturally grounded spaces for Black dancers and youth.”

In 2023, she founded For the Culture Co., “a not-for-profit organization dedicated to elevating Black influences in dance and bridging gaps in traditional dance education.” Through this platform, she offers workshops that connect dancers with Black cultural roots and encourage self-expression through movement. She also works as a Professor in Centennial College’s Commercial dance program and is a faculty member with The MOVMNT Collective, “a community designed to provide dancers and emerging choreographers with the tools and support they need to build sustainable careers and make a meaningful impact through their artistic practice.”

In keeping with Faith Jade’s mission to use dance to explore deep and important issues. Her dance film Feel was featured at Toronto’s 2022 Let The Elephants Dance gala. The short film looks at the connections between “Blackness, police brutality, and mental health,” and invites audiences to reflect and feel deeply.

Through her leadership, Faith Jade continues to create welcoming and inspiring spaces where dancers can be proud of their identities. She encourages young artists to move with confidence, courage, and care, reminding us that dance can be both powerful and healing.

Thank you, Faith, for your unwavering dedication to Black excellence and for reshaping the future of dance education in Ontario.
