Karen Kain is a name synonymous with excellence in Canadian ballet. Trained at Canada’s National Ballet School in Toronto, she joined the Corps de Ballet at just 18 years old in 1969. By 1971, she was promoted to Principal Dancer, marking the start of an extraordinary career.Â
Renowned for her artistry and elegance, Karen performed leading roles in beloved classical ballets and embraced innovative contemporary works. She also represented Canada on the world stage, dancing as a guest artist with prestigious companies—including the legendary Bolshoi Ballet.Â
After retiring from the stage in 1997, Karen remained deeply involved in the dance community. She served as Artist-in-Residence and then, in 2005, became Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, a role she held with vision and grace for 16 years until her retirement in 2021.Â
Karen Kain continues to inspire generations of dancers with her legacy of artistic excellence, leadership, and unwavering dedication to the development of ballet in Ontario and across Canada.Â
✨ Thank you, Karen, for paving the way for so many dancers to dream big and dance boldly.Â
